Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

Like many of us, I never expected to work in the Insurance industry. When in college I certainly helped out the family business, but never had true aspirations to join in. I did although start my working carrier in the insurance space, but with an insurance carrier called Unum. After 3 or so years I started to really enjoy Insurance and found myself quickly looking at how I could make a long career out of it. I then joined Bassler & Co. in 2012 and have loved working to grow this company and support our clients needs.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

When I started I had very little contacts and did not know much. I felt the pressure to not only learn the business the best I could, but also as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, I hit the road and started networking and turning over every rock I could find. I did not let the answer of “no” slow me down. You quickly learn how to grow thick skin and keep chugging on.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

Yes, I am a millennial and certain assumptions come with my generation. I can certainly say that is truly not me. I enjoy hard work and do not shy away from getting my hands dirty and putting in the needed hours to succeed. There is nothing better than working hard and helping a current or new account with their insurance needs. I think its in my blood and the competitor in me. I will not allow myself to feel like to was given anything that I did not work for.

How has this industry impacted your life?

This industry is labeled as one of the worst jobs to work in here in 2024 by the Wall Street Journal. I beg to differ! I think this a fantastic industry and could not be happier to be in it. I absolutely love the competition as I mentioned, but even more enjoy my relationships with my clients and assisting them with their needs. If I could rewind to college I would do it all over again and jump into the Insurance Space.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

After graduation, I knew my original plan of going into education was done. I had previous sales experience being with CUTCO (if you know you know), and when Farmers Insurance showed me what the possibilities were, I took it.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

Being 22 and broke, starting a scratch agency was definitely an obstacle. I overcame through some savvy marketing ideas. Unfortunately that wasn’t enough as I left my book at Farmers in 2018 and took a sales role with Allstate but I took what I learned when I was down on my luck and magnified that at my agency now.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

We are NOT tech support and we pride ourselves on efficiency. What I can do in an hour with calls, texts, and emails trumps my counterparts who prefer to do everything in person. Both work, but as the older generation passes on, so does their techniques.

How has this industry impacted your life?

Since I’ve bought into my agency in 2022, I’ve seen my life turn for the better. I enjoy having the freedom of an owner.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

Insurance isn’t a glamorous industry, but everyone has to have it. Most people think “schmoozers” when the topic of insurance agents come up. I have always loved a challenge and seeing an opportunity to help make insurance less intimidating and educate people about it’s importance has motivated my passion for having a career in this industry.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

I came from a background of hospitality, which I always think of as an industry that goes above and being for customers. With insurance, I was intimidated by the rules and regulations, along with learning a new industry as a whole.

Being limited in the options we sometimes have for clients can be frustrating when the goal is to be a resource and an agent who strives to make insurance easily obtainable and less daunting for consumers.

The best way to overcome that frustration was to continue to educate clients about the insurance industry and to help create a plan of action that works best for them while still making sure their coverage needs are met.

Taking the time to empathize with people has truly helped make a huge difference in the way they see insurance agents and our industry.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

Our generation wants to see progressive change. We value transparency, integrity, and strong leadership. We also want consumers to be educated about the products they buy, especially when it comes to the intangibles.

I always tell my clients that the biggest areas you will see our value as insurance agents are:

  1. When we save you money on rates.

  2. More importantly, when you have a claim and hope you have a policy that best protects you while having an agent to support you along the way.

How has this industry impacted your life?

This industry has given me a sense of purpose in being the change for how people view insurance agents and what we do day to day. Striving to educate consumers to help them make more informed choices and being able to relate to them during this hard market, offers reassurance for why we continue to do the work we do in this industry. Ultimately, being a resource for people that don’t fully understand insurance or it’s importance has been a rewarding role in making a difference to the people we get to help.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

Insurance was always a field I had eyeballed since I was young because my father was in the industry. After working in a different industry for six years I ultimately decided it was time to pursue the insurance industry. I entered the insurance industry for its blend of a flexible schedule and the opportunity to interact with diverse individuals.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

Having a father in the industry is great, but it also means when I first started in the industry my dad had already tapped into our network of family and friends for clients. To overcome this, I leveraged the internet, creating a website, engaging on social media, and starting a blog. These efforts helped me attract new customers beyond our immediate circle and expanding my client base. I also became active in the Chamber of Commerce, local youth baseball leagues, and other community clubs.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

I believe most generations have more in common than they have different. In the workplace, it’s essential to recognize that despite generational differences, we all share desires for respect, recognition, and meaningful work. Understanding this similarity fosters collaboration, empathy, and a more inclusive environment where diverse perspectives can thrive, benefitting both individuals and organizations alike.

How has this industry impacted your life?

This industry has profoundly impacted my life. It has provided me with the opportunity to spend quality time with my children through a flexible work schedule while also enabling me to effectively assist people in managing their risks. It has opened doors to new relationships, enriching both my personal and professional spheres in ways I hadn’t imagined before.

Being one of the first calls when a friend considers starting a business and seeks insurance and business advice is truly awesome. These relationships and opportunities provide me with the most rewarding experiences and validate my decision to join the insurance industry.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

Getting people in my Hometown to view me as a Business person and not the kid that grew up here. I was able to overcome this by providing Service to several customers and the word of mouth spread.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

Despite what you might think we actually enjoy the work. We are versatile because we have worked and lived with and without technology.

How has this industry impacted your life?

It has allowed me to grow my family. I now have many customers that I would consider as family. I have been able to see many milestones in there lives and learn from them along the way.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

I started in the insurance industry after college, and I found it offered a variety of rewarding aspects that involved many of my personal interests such as helping others, connecting one on one, and the opportunity to connect my career interest with passion of helping others. Especially the Spanish speaking community.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

My first obstacle was asking current clients for referrals and attending networking events. Some of our best customers will come from our referrals, however I found it a bit intimidating to ask. With time, and an email template that I follow, it became easier to ask and mention during a call or an email. Networking is something I am still working on, however I attend as many as possible and have a standard limit of connecting with at least 5 people at each event. This helps ease the process and feels less overwhelming.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

I am part of the Millennial generation, and we are known to be hard working people who were part of both sides of the internet growth. I enjoy the research online as well as on a book, which demonstrates our flexibility and motivation to get things done. We are fun and energetic people who are looking to grow and develop.

How has this industry impacted your life?

I have learned so much from basic insurance knowledge that we should all know, to larger coverages that I didn’t even think about or knew it existed. I have thanks to this career opportunity, taught family and friends about insurance and it’s importance. Sharing my knowledge and expertise with others is a satisfaction I did not think I would feel. Lastly, it has helped me grow as an individual and it has allowed me to meet people from various backgrounds and industries, travel and connect with other young agents who have similar experience as I do.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

Choosing a career in insurance was a matter of providence and purpose, given my family’s history in the industry and my personal mission to empower others to transcend their circumstances through understanding, faith, and action. Despite my initial aspirations to work in the Foreign Service, influenced by my degree in religion, living in the Middle East, and working with the federal government, life’s unpredictable path led me to reconsider my professional goals. When we moved to Wheaton, IL, for my wife’s job, I explored temporary work options, eventually re-introducing me to financial services. After three years at a Fortune 100 Insurance company, I started Green Brook, where our tagline is “Take Hold of Your Tomorrow.” My path allowed me to find a platform where I could implement my mission on a broader scale. Insurance, to me, is more than a profession - it is a medium through which I can foster environments of peace over fear, advocate for equity and understanding, and support individual and community transformation.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

I’m a perfectionist, and there’s a lot to get right when starting any agency. For example, in the first year and a half, I personally ensured that every client received service that was as close to perfect as possible. This greatly enhanced Green Brook’s reputation, but it was unsustainable for the business. Therefore, I had to hire staff who were as close to perfect as possible. Where I was 98% efficient and incredibly stressed out, the Client Care Team is 92% efficient, corrects mistakes, and has a healthy work-life balance.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

I think intentional space should be made for people to be seen, known and enjoyed as individuals. This fosters a sense of community and can promote good teamwork. At Green Brook, we have a weekly 20-30 minute informal meeting where we’ll ask a silly icebreaker question or discuss a topic that builds off of a previous week. It seems cheesy/awkward but people actually love it and it cultivates a culture of humanity, mutual respect, transparency, and using our abilities toward our teams’ purposes.

How has this industry impacted your life?

The industry has impacted my life on many levels. One thing I enjoyed about working in the federal government was the interesting people I got to meet. Some of my Green Brook clients are extremely interesting. Two of my clients who are under 50 could be billionaires soon. I have clients who have fought in wars, clients who have faced and fought all types of discrimination, clients who are religious leaders, professors and authors and one client who is a public intellectual. The relationships are incredible.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

I knew it was a way to have a great career while also being able to enjoy a rewarding work/life balance. In college I had some great professors who came from some large insurance companies and I really enjoyed my risk management classes. Being very family-oriented, I wanted to have a job that I could do while still being able to coach my kids and make it to all of their various events.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

When I first got my insurance license I was still an undergrad in college, so having credibility at that age can be challenging. I was lucky enough to have great mentors that I was able to learn from early in my career. Finding people who have had success and being able to learn from them was a tremendous boon.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

We are a dynamic bunch. I’m about to age out of this “under 40” age group, but many of us grew up along with the internet and (luckily) social media didn’t become prevalent until we were young adults. As such, we know how to create and foster genuine relationships with people while still being tech savvy enough that we can be adaptable and quick to learn emerging technologies.

How has this industry impacted your life?

I’ve been extraordinarily lucky in that I’ve gotten the opportunity to meet and work with so many amazing people. My colleagues, clients, and carrier relationships mean a lot more to me than any of them probably realize. At the end of the day, this industry has allowed me to have a career that is flexible enough to give me the freedom to spend time with my family while also being able to help people every single day.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

My Grandpa Larry and my mom Nikki had been in the insurance business for most of my life growing up, and I had always found it interesting. I enjoy talking to people and forming/maintaining relationships within my community as well as surrounding towns. I also took a few classes in college, and it really sprung my interest as well. My mom told me to choose the independent side if I were going to get into the business, and I am very thankful for that! Compass Insurance has been a great fit for me.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

I started in a town outside of mine, where I had to learn to grow relationships and work with people I had never met. We had an experienced CSR, Jodee, in a nearby office who really helped me get started and understand insurance in depth and made me feel comfortable. There were plenty of ups and downs and “no’s” in the beginning, but I learned to turn the no’s into learning pieces instead of getting too down on myself. I now have a great CSR in Miranda and she has allowed me to focus on growing and maintaining my customer base. I am very fortunate to have my hometown and the people who have trusted me in my early years in the business.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

I’ve noticed that some people let age become a factor when choosing an insurance agent, and while I don’t think it affects me as much anymore with multiple years in the industry, I think that there are some brilliant young individuals coming into the workplace eager to help new customers. I would encourage people to trust in their schooling and allow them to help them as the industry continues to get older.

How has this industry impacted your life?

This industry has impacted my life for the better in a variety of ways. It has given me stability and flexibility in the workplace. It has allowed me to work with numerous people who I look up to and enjoy learning from inside and outside of the industry. I now see this as a career rather than just a job, and I feel fortunate for it to be my first job out of college. I look forward to seeing what the future brings.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

I graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in communications, aspiring to become a journalist or news TV anchor. When I entered the insurance industry, it was initially just a job opportunity while I searched for a career-related position. However, after obtaining my property and casualty license and assisting customers with their insurance needs, I discovered a passion for the work. I found myself receiving referrals from numerous clients, including family members, friends, and coworkers. This made me realize the significant need for assistance within the Hispanic and high-risk driver communities.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

When I started, I had no prior knowledge of insurance. I began working for a nonstandard carrier that insured high-risk customers. Understanding the underwriting guidelines was challenging. I was tasked with insuring customers classified as ‘high risk,’ and I needed to ensure that I followed every underwriting procedure for every policy I wrote. Dealing with ‘high risk’ drivers was particularly challenging. This is a market that many insurance carriers and agencies do not want to accept. So, I found myself in a challenging position where my ethics and professional morals guided me to continue educating myself and seek resources to assist all these high-risk drivers who were often left behind due to their driving records. Additionally, I faced the challenge of working with non-English speaking customers, requiring me to develop translation skills.

While Spanish is my first language and communicating with Spanish-speaking customers was easy, translating from Spanish to English posed a significant challenge. However, through practice, perseverance, and a commitment to personal growth, I overcame this challenge and continued to evolve as new challenges arose.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

People should be aware that we are currently facing significant challenges in the industry. However, despite the challenges, the industry continues to maintain its stability and it still offers numerous opportunities for professional growth, helping others, and building a career. There are specific areas within the industry where we need the new generation to engage and pursue careers, such as underwriting, claims adjuster, and new insurance producers etc. As the industry evolves, especially with advancements in technology, we need to adapt to these changes. Embracing new generations and encouraging them to pursue careers in the industry is vital for its continued growth and resilience, particularly in today’s challenging market environment.

How has this industry impacted your life?

After finishing college, I found myself in debt and struggling to pay bills. Losing my parents at a young age taught me to find a way to survive. Fortunately, the insurance industry offered me a job and a career that I am proud of. Working with an independent agency like Pronto Insurance Services has provided me with the opportunity to collaborate with multiple insurance carriers, develop professional skills, build a well-prepared team, and continuously evolve to adapt to the industry’s ongoing changes. I take pride in the career path I’ve chosen and the opportunities it has afforded me, and I am excited to continue growing in the industry.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

Insurance has always been part of my life. I grew up watching my mom build an agency in our hometown. I remember riding around with her back then snapping polaroid pictures of a new “risk she was writing.’ I remember as a child I did not understand why she was writing about all these random buildings. In high school I was the person keying every paper document into our new agency management system, TAM. Then later I rejoined the agency helping with marketing and bookkeeping because it fit my schedule as a mom of three young kids. A few years later I decided to make the leap to the sales side and have enjoyed it since. This career has so much opportunity for growth and professional development.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

When I transitioned to sales, I was predominantly active on the health side. The biggest obstacle then was lack of knowledge. I was lucky enough to get paired with a more seasoned agent as a mentor, Rick. I learned a wealth of knowledge as I worked alongside him on health policies. Even today I still will lean on him if I hit a obstacle I can’t pass on my own. When it comes to P/C side I feel like knowledge was again the biggest obstacle at first. The one statement that I can still hear every time I hit one is “just pick up the phone and call the underwriter.” This was advice I often heard and at first didn’t like it. I wanted answers now but with each discussion with the underwriter I learned a little more about their appetite and the ins and outs of their company. This helped me prospect risk that I had a good fit for and be more economical in placing them.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

I am included in the Millennial generation, the one that used to cause the biggest eye roll when mentioned until Gen Z came along. In the workplace we can adapt well and are flexible. Don’t mistake our confidence for arrogance, we are motivated to find creative solutions and can seem overbearing when doing so. Our generation is more tuned in to sensitive social issues than older generations. Of course, our most well-known trait in the workplace, we can be IT when needed. Seeing as we grew up with the beginning of internet and computers becoming common and phones making information accessible everywhere.

How has this industry impacted your life?

This industry has impacted my ability to enjoy life outside of the office. It has helped me gain financial freedom to support my kids’ hopes and dreams one sport at a time. Ensuring I have time to be present as they grow up whether it be a school field trip or camping in a tent at scout camp. The flexible schedule along with the ability to grow a book directly tied to the work you put in is pivotal to enjoying your life now, not years down the road.

Another impact is the people I have encountered and some that are now close friends. I suggest all new agents attend seminars and conventions. You will become part of a community within this industry which is priceless. Doing so enables you to learn and grow off others’ experience. Even if it’s just not to feel alone and stuck in this rough market we are currently seeing. Go take part and be active, it will help you thrive.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

Petri Insurance Agency has been in my husband’s family since 1921. Five years ago, my Father-in-law approached me to ask if I would be interested in taking it over. After some serious contemplation, I decided to take on the task. I am both honored and humbled to be the 4th generation in this role and look forward to continuing the legacy and success of the business.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

Stepping into a new career path and learning the ins and outs of insurance was not an easy feat to accomplish in just a few short years. Every day brought new challenges and every situation was different. I was fortunate enough to have the guidance and wisdom of my Father-in-law and his very knowledgeable staff to help guide me through it.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

Insurance is an ever-changing industry & our generation is very accustomed to change. We are able to adapt very easily, providing our customers with the best possible service and protection of their assets. This ability not only gives the customer peace of mind but builds trust in knowing that our agents are working for their specific needs.

How has this industry impacted your life?

Insurance has allowed me to connect with other businesses in the area & meet some wonderful people along the way. Networking is very important for the success of any business, but more specifically the insurance industry. We often see and hear from customers when they are going through some of the toughest times in their life. However, knowing that we are able to ease the burden slightly because they were given customized insurance coverage to cover these unfortunate situations, is a truly rewarding career.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

After college I knew I wanted to go into a career where I had the opportunity to help people and after a summer internship at our local agency, I knew I could fulfil that dream through a career as an insurance agent.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

As a new agent, you don’t know what you don’t know. I relied heavily (and still do) on the more experience agents in the office to teach me how varies policies work and how to handle different situations. I hope to return the favor someday. Big I Illinois also has tons of resources to plug into that helped educate me on the different policy languages and how to understand the intricate details of a policy.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

I think sometimes our generation gets a bad rap, but from observing my peers, I see a smart and dedicated group of individuals. Their commitment to clients and the industry as a whole are something to be admired.

How has this industry impacted your life?

Through this industry I have been blessed with the opportunity to meet many different people, many of which start out as clients, but ends in friendships. This industry has also blessed my family and I in many ways. I love the flexibility it provides for my young family. Whether that’s picking up one of my sick kids from school or daycare or being able to take my daughter on a class field trip.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

I had a good connection with our community and felt I could build a strong career by helping businesses and individuals in our area.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

I knew nothing about insurance or sales! I utilized the Big I resources to learn about insurance. I started working toward my CIC to get an in-depth understanding of how policy forms work.

I started learning how to leverage social media and video to bring in new business. I had to find something that helped me stand out from competitors and video was what helped me do that. Video proposals, podcasting, and social media are tools I still use today to bring value to my clients and stand out from the crowd.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

My generation is very passionate about helping people, we just do it in a different way. Many younger insurance professionals are very efficient with technology and are able to maximize their performance with unique tools and strategies.

How has this industry impacted your life?

The insurance industry has allowed me to build a career that I never could have imagined. Insurance has afforded me the opportunity to work with so many awesome people and businesses. Being a sales producer also allows me to utilize my creativity to grow our agency and support our clients.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

I chose to be in insurance because I wanted to be able to protect others from being financially devastated. Something that has never happened before happens everyday, and I have the personality and will to take that on. The industry is full of people who can peer into a blurry future and offer peace of mind. I think that’s why I find it so interesting.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

I didn’t understand the difference between sales and marketing when I started. I was great at sales but not marketing. Once I took the time to understand marketing and putting a consistent plan in place the leads came rolling in, and the close ratio took off.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

There are some of us out there that are hungry for work. Those of us that are, we want to be in a place that we are most needed. Where our skills AND values are aligned with the objective of the project, product, or overall business strategy.

How has this industry impacted your life?

Being on the agency side for the past four years now I’ve adopted three key virtues. Prudence. Carrier appetites are still drastically changing. Patience. Landing or not landing the sale is choppy in the micro, but smooth in the macro. Last, perhaps most important is Grit. Giving a client the guidance to get back on their feet after a devastating situation.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

Having grown up with parents who had their own agency I was able to see the industry from a different perspective. Over time I learned that insurance was a very unique way of helping people. At the end of the day that is what we do, we help protect people. That is something that has always stuck with me and it’s why I wanted to work in insurance.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

Oddly enough, having a family with an agency was a detriment to my ability to obtain an underwriting position out of college. I was consistently rejected because people thought of me as a wasted investment that would leave in a few years to join the family agency. That did end up happening, but it was not my plan at the time. It was only through persistence, a trait I think most agents share, that I was able to find a company that viewed my family’s situation as an asset rather than a liability. I took that persistence and learned as much as I could, as quickly as I could, and I’ll probably never stop learning.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

The individuals in our generation are not defined by the stereotypes of our generation. Contrary to the generalities that are spoken about Millennials, there are a lot of people in our generation that are hardworking, loyal, and caring. Hardworking for a vision we believe in, loyal to those who have earned it, and caring for the customers we work with...We just might be hard to find.

How has this industry impacted your life?

This is a hard question to answer. To a certain extent the industry is my life, I never got out of it from the time I was a part time janitor almost as soon as I could walk. The biggest impact on my life has been the wonderful people I’ve met along the way. Coworkers, fellow agents, competitors, and customers alike.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

It is the family business. I am 3rd generation of our 83-year-old agency that my Grandpa started out of his house. He farmed during the day and sold life insurance at night.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

I didn’t know much about insurance when I started, so I had to teach myself a lot of it and attend as many classes and courses as possible that companies were offering. The more you do insurance the more familiar you get with talking about insurance with clients and customers.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

I feel like my generation is the end of some of the old work style in the insurance industry. The generation below me is more involved with all the technology, doing zoom calls with clients and texting them rather than emailing and meeting face to face.

How has this industry impacted your life?

The industry has given me the flexibility to work at the hours I need to as well as be able to be there for my family whenever they need be. The industry isn’t going anywhere and it gives me a chance to continue my family legacy.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

Learning the “insurance language” was tough for me as I had no familiarity with insurance whatsoever. I overcame this by being blessed with an amazing mentor, Dave Schmitt, who encouraged me not to give up and told me that I was born to do this.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

It is still all about in person meetings and relationships that extend beyond the insurance piece.

How has this industry impacted your life?

It has allowed me to provide a great life for my wife and kids yet still coach my kids while being a present husband/father. There are many successful people in sales who need to jump on an airplane to get their deals. Those of us who have found insurance generally can be home for dinner most nights with our families which I consider to be one of the greatest blessings this industry has to offer.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

I chose to pursue a career in insurance because I saw the opportunity available both personally and professionally. My career has allowed me to become a trusted advisor in the community and the ability to build something for myself and my family.

As with anything, starting from scratch has its uphill battle. Throughout the years I was able to develop relationships with clients and business associates that helped build the foundation of my business.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

We adapt quickly to market changes. In today’s world that is critical. Just over the span of a few years the industry has completely changed. Whether it’s from a marketing, underwriting, or profitability perspective, you have to be willing to adjust with the waves of the market.

How has this industry impacted your life?

I started in this industry as an intern working for one of the largest companies in the country. After that, I was a captive agent with them for 10 years and now I own an independent insurance agency. I have learned a lot over the years and built many relationships. I am grateful that I was able to open my own business that will hopefully stay with my family for generations to come.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

Growing up, I saw both my Father and Grandfather have success with different firms. It was intruiguing to me to see them deal with so many different industries and business professionals. I spent time after school throughout high school working with my Father and really enjoyed the time we spent together and the things I learned alongside him.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

Like any typical young producer, getting over the age factor took some time, and at times it felt like things would never improve. After a few wins, much learning and some increased confidence the tides started to turn. Even to this day, the peaks and valleys of our business can be challening at times, but remembering those successes really can help the confidence when it might be lacking.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

We do actually like to work in the office as opposed to WFH!

How has this industry impacted your life?

Where to start? The relationships that have been forged with so many wonderful clients, colleagues, carrier partners, and others has been awesome! The flexibility that our business allows has been great for our family setting which I really love. The continued education never stops which is great for developing and growing as a client advisor. Overall, a great business to be fully invested in!

When I first started working in insurance, the two main obstacles I faced were the complexity of the industry itself and building credibility and trust with those I would interact with. Insurance involves a multitude of policies, regulations, and terminology that can be overwhelming to navigate, especially for someone new to the field. To overcome these obstacles, I have dedicated myself to continuous learning. I immersed myself in many different training programs, sought guidance from experienced colleagues, and made a conscious effort to stay up to date on industry developments that directly related to my job. I also attend seminars, workshops, and utilize online resources to continue to learn and improve.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

Our generation has a high aptitude for technology, having grown up alongside the digital boom. Growing up being immersed in technology has equipped us with a solid grasp of various digital tools and platforms, making us highly sought after in technology-driven environments. In the insurance industry, embracing technology is crucial for staying competitive, improving operational efficiency, customer experiences, and fostering innovation. How has this industry impacted your life?

Working in the insurance industry has really made a difference in my life. It’s helped develop a deep understanding of risk management and financial planning, which has been incredibly valuable personally. The ever changing nature of the industry keeps me engaged and constantly learning, allowing for a tremendous amount of personal and professional growth. Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

I did not choose a career in insurance; I chose a career in politics, leading me to insurance. Insurance touches so many different aspects of the world of politics that I knew that I would always have my hands full.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

My biggest challenge was and still is learning the ins and outs of insurance and how legislation affects the insurance industry as a whole, the agency, the broker, and their clients. I’m still learning, and I think anyone in the insurance world knows you never stop learning. Luckily, I have been surrounded by some of the best insurance experts in the world. Between the Government Relations Committee members, Phil Lackman, and Brett Gerger, I know that I have the resources and the institutional knowledge available to me who can help solve any problem.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

I think my generation (Millennials) have a bad rap for being lazy. I have not found that to be true. I think we are a motivated generation to succeed beyond even our own expectations. Success drives our generation, and we are always wanting more.

How has this industry impacted your life?

I can honestly say that the insurance industry and Big I Illinois have changed my life. I have been fortunate enough to have been raised in the association and political world my entire life. I have met some amazing people from all over the country that I consider family. In my short tenure with Big I Illinois, I have met some of the best and most talented people. I am truly awe-inspired by their work ethic, their expertise, and the level of care they put into their profession on a daily basis. It has made me a better lobbyist, a better leader, and a better person for having the honor of working for and on behalf of them. I have always wanted to be a lobbyist and follow in the footsteps of my parents. Big I Illinois and the insurance industry has provided me the opportunity to fulfill that dream.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

I have always been very competitive and goal oriented. I saw my dad work in an industry that was tenure based for promotions, and I wanted to align myself in an industry that you didn’t have to be one of the old guys to be at the top. I also saw the opportunity for young individuals to make their way in an aging industry that had a ton of flexibility, unlimited earning potential, and really making a difference in the lives of my clients.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

Being thrown into sales right out of college had a ton of challenges. Business owners were questioning my knowledge and ability to understand their needs at such a young age. I doubled down on my education and obtained my CIC and CRM designations very early in my career. That gave me a knowledge base most of my peers didn’t have. I coupled that with a relentless drive to be successful and things turned out well for me.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

My generation is the perfect blend between knowledge and technology. We are old enough to have the knowledge and life experience needed to be a professional consultant to our clients, and young enough to be able to navigate new and emerging technology that makes us efficient. We also aren’t afraid of hard work and getting our hands dirty. There is a changing of the guard happening right now and my generation is ready to assume the leadership roles needing filled by the departures of the older generation from the workforce.

How has this industry impacted your life?

This industry has provided so much for me on so many different levels. On a professional level, my cup is full. I have built relationships with clients, co-workers, and peers that will last a lifetime. The industry has taken me places and let me experience things I never dreamed of. On a personal side, it has allowed me the flexibility to be the dad and husband I need to be. I have 2 kids involved in travel sports and I rarely miss an event of theirs. This industry has allowed me to show up and be present in the lives of those that are most important in my life. It has also provided me with the means to make that possible and give my family a life we are all thankful for and blessed to be leading.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

Our agency is a family agency with my great grandfather starting it in 1925. I studied finance in college and always liked the idea of owning my own business. I talked to my mom and dad quite a bit about going into the agency and decided in college that insurance is what I wanted to do.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

I wouldn’t say I had any major obstacles. The biggest challenge was learning the business which is the case for any new agent. There is a lot to learn to be a good agent from knowing your coverages, underwriting, how the claims process works, accounting, etc. Once you start feeling comfortable things inevitably change. Fortunately, though, I came into an established agency with a good staff and my mom who has worked in the agency since 1981 so I had good agents to learn from.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

Insurance is challenging but can be fun and rewarding at the same time which is what any person should look for in a job. I enjoy seeing how different businesses operate and you get to learn quite a bit about an insured’s operations and the challenges they face.

How has this industry impacted your life?

Insurance has provided a living for four generations of my family and my wife and I are very proud to be running our family’s agency now. I know it’s cliche, but the best part about insurance is the relationships you develop with your clients. You get to know about your clients’ business, their kids, their family, and potentially help them in a time of need. The clients you serve are your family, your friends, and your community and helping them in a time of need is hard to put a price on.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

Insurance has always been a part of my life. My grandfather started as a partner in an independent insurance agency in the 1950’s and my father continued the agency until 2013 when I took over. Both my father and mother both worked in the agency. I started with the odd jobs around the office like putting away files as a young teenager.

As I went through college, I started to understand that it was a great opportunity. Most young people don’t get excited about joining the insurance industry but if they look closely they should. I enjoyed studying business and when presented with the opportunity to take over a successful agency I couldn’t pass it up.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

Very few people come into the insurance industry with an idea of exactly what they are walking into. Being around it my whole life I had more background than most but couldn’t appreciate everything that goes into the day to day.

Technical knowledge is an obstacle for everyone, I think. Getting your license doesn’t give you everything you need to sell to and care for clients on day 1. Early on I got my CIC designation which helped me get start to get a handle on the technical side.

Another challenge as a young person was to create trust with prospects and clients. Showing people that even though I was young I had the knowledge to secure their financial future was a challenge. That was different with everyone but explaining fully and listening to their concerns were the biggest help.

Every day is different, and a lot comes with experience. You do truly learn by doing.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

I think our generation is comfortable in the traditional ways of doing business but wants to be backed by great technology. I would love to sit down with a customer, schedule a phone or video call so that I can have a productive conversation and understand their needs. Then when the time comes to put together coverage options, I want the best platform I can find to deliver the solution.

How has this industry impacted your life?

The insurance industry has certainly been a positive force in my life. It provided a good life for me as a child and is helping me do so for my family. I see local agencies like us being a force for good in the community as well. We are happy to and proud to support organizations that help the people around us prosper. It has also helped give me perspective. I get the chance to talk with a lot of different people in different situations and appreciate where they come from. Life would look a lot different without insurance in it.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

After selling numerous products over the early years of my career, I found that insurance was the only product I could sell with a clear conscious. With past experience selling credit cards, bank products, alcohol, and other consumer goods, Insurance was the only product I felt was necessary and wasn’t draining clients’ wallets or detrimental to their health. That paired with my desire to serve as previously I was pursuing a career in law enforcement, I quickly found insurance had service aspects such as assisting people in their time of need without risk of having to take a life. I am proud to serve in the insurance industry and intend to continue through retirement. If my children have an interest, I look forward to bringing them into the insurance family that has treated me so well.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

The obstacles I first encountered was the sheer knowledge necessary to be effective. I was able to reach out to mentors, such as Tom Ross of Big I Illinois, Phil Lackman, other seasoned insurance professionals like Tom Walsh and Drew Kelly as well as attending the CONVO and the Sales & Leadership Conference, which rounded out my education, teaching me about lines and coverage I did not see day to day which made my transition from Wholesale to Retail even more seamless. I would say outside of that it was really being able to figure out the balance between paper processing, people skills, and policy information. Once again, in the beginning and still to this day, I rely on the advice of my mentors.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

I would say that the level of tech-savvy our generation has is sometimes viewed as us trying to do less work. However, I feel it is more of an efficiency practice. My father always said work smart, not hard, and just because we are working smart doesn’t mean we are still not putting in the hard work. In the beginning of my career and still to this day I put in 12 hour plus days and work on the weekend.

How has this industry impacted your life?

This industry has consumed my life. I turn to the industry for everything from income to friendship. All my friends are involved in the industry. All the friends I make who have become my clients, and the formation of the relationship was sparked by my involvement in insurance. Many of my social events are insurance related, I would have to say there is not much in my life that is outside of the insurance industry or tangentially associated with insurance that fills my time.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

While I was working in agricultural and commercial lending, I was approached about beginning an insurance career. Knowing how much risk my clients at the bank faced, I thought it would be an interesting and rewarding career to pursue. Having an interest in commodity futures and grain marketing, intertwining a risk management plan for farmers was an intriguing idea.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge at first is becoming comfortable and fully understanding the products you are offering to your clientele. When you are working with older clients, proving your knowledge makes them more comfortable working with a wide age gap.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

Our generation can adapt quickly to change. With everchanging technology and software, we are not afraid to try something new if it makes sense for the workplace and ultimately benefits our clients. We often find the most efficient way to get great results in the workplace.

How has this industry impacted your life?

Being a young agent has been challenging but ultimately rewarding. There is a lot of opportunity to do well in this industry. It all comes down to hard work, strong customer service, consistent self-education and trying to help others. Working in a rural area and with a lot of family farms, I enjoy helping them manage their risk in order to have a successful crop year. I am really looking forward to being involved in this industry for the coming decades and to keep growing our one-location, independent agency in Buckley.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

I really just fell into the insurance industry. I really wanted to get out of the industry I was going to school for and my current employer had a job opening and the rest is history!

I knew almost nothing about insurance when I started! I literally went home after my first day of work and Googled “what is a deductible?” I am very fortunate that I have an amazing team at Leffelmans that has taught me so much about the industry.

Growing up, my generation had to adapt to technology pretty quickly, and I feel like that ability to adapt has carried over to the rest of our lives.

How has this industry impacted your life?

I am definitely a lot less shy than I was when I first started in insurance! This industry really has allowed me to come out of my shell.

I had a couple of mentors who inspired me to major in Risk Management and Insurance. My biggest obstacle was learning to handle the highs and lows of the insurance industry. Starting out, I wanted to win every time and believed that any failure was my fault. The hard market taught me that things don’t always go as planned, and that’s alright. I’ve learned not to get too comfortable on a peak or too discouraged in a valley. These lessons have been crucial to my growth in the industry.

I don’t think being part of a certain generation defines a person. Every generation has highly motivated, driven individuals. However, I do believe my generation values flexibility, freedom, and authenticity a lot. Generational characteristics evolve over time, and I feel like my generation has a lot to prove.

The insurance industry has had a profound impact on my life. With my wife also working in the agency, our family has been incredibly blessed by the opportunities we’ve been given. There were just so many cool acronyms... I wanted to be on the inside and know what they meant.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

I think the hardest thing was not knowing answers to questions. Asking/looking for answers was the only way to solve that... and still holds true even years later.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

Not sure I’m qualified to speak for an entire generation? I will say personally, although technology plays a huge role in efficiency, I much prefer face to face interactions.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

One might say insurance sort of chose me or at least one local business man did. I was between careers and a local businessman; Jay Hageman had recently bought out his partner at the Newman location. Hageman was looking for new agents. Lucky for him, I was not afraid of a challenge, so I jumped in with both feet. I originally thought I would be just selling insurance. On day one, I was acquiring contracts with carriers, writing our E & O application, speaking with carrier representatives, and completing carrier contracts. And the rest they say is history.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

Opening a new insurance agency is no small task, and for me not coming from the insurance industry, first I had to understand and learn what we needed to maintain the book of business that was purchased, before I build anything from that foundation. I knew I had to get those contracts established first, before anything else. Many long hours of writing contracts and making phone calls to get those contracts, but the process was all worth it and the knowledge I learned was irreplaceable.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

Millennials should be called the “pivot generation.” I, along with others my age, have become so good at pivoting with what life has thrown at us. Many of us went to college, but are now in different careers further away from our studies. We manage numerous tasks at a time, not only in the workplace, but many of us are at a point in life where we are juggling parenthood, aging parents, death, etc. Our generation’s determination can be unmatched when we set our minds to a project.

How has this industry impacted your life?

The insurance industry has changed my life. One man’s faith in me to build his independent insurance agency came at a time when I needed someone to believe in me. After his sudden passing in October 2018, I was more determined to see our dream come true. And in March 2019, I was finally able to purchase the agency. The agency has grown over the last 5 years, and it is standing all on that initial effort and diligence I experienced during that first year of the agency.

I have a teaching degree and after working with kids for a while I needed a change and by choosing insurance, I was able to apply all my skills into a new career.

It was not easy to sell at the beginning; I knew very little about insurance when I first started. Learning from books wasn’t enough. The theory not only had to be applied to practice, but you also had to learn about the industry you are in, the industry you are insuring, the markets and finally networking with other professionals helped a lot too.

Strong work ethic and quick adaptation to changes.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

I chose this career because I had gotten my feet wet in a outside sales role at ADP and loved what I did but hated the fact that I started at 0 every year. I loved the fact that in this industry I could not only assist business and clients with their needs but also be able to build a book of business and build on it every year. It truly has been a win/ win.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

How to differentiate myself. I was new to this industry and knew just enough to be dangerous. I had the B2B background so getting my foot in the door with prospects was never an issue, but finding that “it” factor that helped me sell beyond price and coverage gaps was hard to find at first. I started to focus on work comp and working with the Institute of Work Comp Professionals and their teachings of how to help companies manage their work comp program instead of just quoting it was a game changer. I quickly wrote a book about work comp called “The Work Comp Control Effect” and it became a number one best seller on Amazon. But I actually use that book more in prospecting and use it as a giveaway at seminars or send to a prospect who has a high mod , etc. Its really been quite the game changer for me.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

We’re adaptive. We can work in most situations and circumstances. We aren’t set in certain way and are always looking at methods and ideas that could transform how things are done for the better, but always understand the importance of “the old way”

How has this industry impacted your life?

Tremendously. I have met some amazing people along this journey from coworkers to other agents to clients. This industry has taken me to some great places and meet new people on a daily basis. There is a since of pride when I inform people what I do and WHY I do it!

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

I actually started my career in insurance after pursuing education in Safety and Risk Management. Rather than work for one company or industry, it was intriguing that I could help an array of different industries and companies with an insurance company and assist their clients in achieving a safety environment. From there, I have taken on some different roles within the insurance industry but carry the same passion for helping other in their own companies.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

Coming from more of a risk management and safety background, the mold between safety, risks, insurance and profitability for the company we served was always a weird dynamic. Stepping back, listening to each party involved, and looking at the big picture made me realize there is always a way to have success!

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

I feel folks in my generation are always up for a new challenge and new ways of tackling the next thing on the agenda. It’s almost like our generation gets bored with the status quo sometimes and wants to always have something to look forward to.

How has this industry impacted your life?

Being from more the carrier side verse the local small town agent side like many of my peers, this industry has allowed me to meet so many new great friends that are now like family to me. I feel I get to me in a new place, meeting with a new person every day, many that have become friends! It’s amazing the relationships that I have made throughout my time in insurance.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

I’ve always been interested in helping people and making sure they are protected. Insurance is a great way to do that. I want to help people understand insurance and why it is important to have.

Keeping up with the industry changes. This industry changes day to day, that was hard for me. I learn something, then it changes. I have just learned that it is ok to have change and to learn something new everyday.

Technology! My generation is great with technology and learning new skills to use in a workplace. We are also great with teamwork in a work place.

My family owns the agency and this year has been the test for my family and for our business. But my family never gives up we just work harder. The insurance industry is always changing and we are up for the challenge.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

I’m a third-generation insurance agent. My Grandfather started what was called Sullivan & Associates Insurance Agency in the 1970’s. Initially I started at the agency as a temporary and seasonal job while I was attending college, but as time went on it didn’t feel right pursuing other fields. The agency was my home, and that’s where I belonged. These days, I’m very happy I went with my heart. The insurance industry has opportunity around every corner. Especially for young hard-working individuals who are willing to walk the road less traveled.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

When I started in the industry I had been struggling with physical and mental health issues for years. While I was still able to get my work done, it was evident that they were holding me back from putting in my best effort. By making the improvement of my mental and physical health a constant focus and concentrating on proper diet and exercise, I have made those issues a thing of the past. Nowadays, I feel free to put my full self in my career and push past whatever limits I thought I had before.

Another major obstacle, which I believe is a common problem for my generation, was the phones. When I started in the industry talking on the phone actually scared me. I couldn’t get through a voicemail without stuttering. It was extremely uncomfortable talking to customers or carriers this way because it was not something I was used to. My normal communications were texts, and so I gravitated towards emails, trying to avoid a phone call at all costs. However, I realized this was not going to be enough if my career was going to be in insurance. Too many situations arise where a phone call is necessary or advantageous. To fix the situation, I made a very conscious effort to make as many calls as possible. Instead of finding reasons not to make a call, I found reasons to pick up the phone. Practice makes perfect, and repetition causes comfort.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

I fall into the younger millennials/older gen Z crowd, and one thing I would tell employers about dealing with this group is not to listen to the media so much. Instead think more about yourself at that age and what would have helped you in that situation. Too often do people put more time and energy at categorizing and looking at differences rather than taking advantage of similarities. Stop paying so much attention to the noise around work/life balance, starting pay, and motivation. From what I’ve heard, those have always been problems. While there may be some merit to these issues, the younger generations truly need what they’ve always needed. Direction, encouragement, and a good example to follow.

One thing I would tell others in my cohort, is they should avoid the allure of work-from-home opportunities. While working from home may seem glamorous on the surface, you are absolutely cutting off important social interactions that would allow you to build rapport with your company more quickly and expand your knowledge of the industry. Remember, the easy choice is not the one that often leads to success.

How has this industry impacted your life?

After being in the industry for over a decade at this point, I could probably write a book on how it’s impacted my life. One thing that stands out is the general knowledge it’s given me of the world and how things work. The insurance industry is tied to just about every other industry out there, and as a result, it gives us the opportunity to learn and be a part of just about everything. It’s a diverse feast of information and social interactions for those who are looking for it.people.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

My dad and brother were already in the industry and it has been good to us. The relationships that my dad developed through his work over the years is admirable, so I always had an open mind about going into the industry. I pursued a degree in sales at Illinois State University. Shortly after graduating, a great opportunity came along to further develop my sales skills and become more educated on insurance in a full-time role.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

Everyone’s beginnings in the industry can be so unique and mine was interesting because I started with a wholesaler during a hard market. Comprehension of the need for a wholesaler throughout this time was difficult and figuring out the how and why. With the help of my peers and management, I was able to understand quickly so I could assist in educating our agency partners on the state of the marketplace, and when to come to us for solutions. There are so many resources around you and people that are willing to help. It is important to capitalize on those learning opportunities.

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

Speed and convenience is everything. Whether it is the insured, agents, or any other insurance company professional, if people want something, they want it now and always look for the ease of doing business. There have always been innovators with each generation, but it has become so much easier to discover faster and easier processes by users than ever before. Customer experience is incredibly valuable.

How has this industry impacted your life?

As I mentioned with some family members in the industry, insurance has been a very influential part of my life and even with only being employed for over two years now. I’ve noticed throughout my career working full-time, I spend more time doing the job, than not. From an outside perspective this doesn’t sound enjoyable, but I have been able to find a great work-life balance thanks to the people around me. Many professionals tell me at industry events how great insurance is and how it is so huge, but can feel small sometimes. The connections and meaningful relationships that I have developed backs up that statement.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in insurance?

My father-in-law built up a successful independent agency over 40 years, and the idea of taking over the family business had a powerful allure. After 8 years in the Navy, I was drawn to the ability to live closer to family and control my own schedule. Plus the sales and ownership aspects offered unlimited growth opportunities that cemented the choice for me.

What obstacles did you face when you first started, and how did you overcome them?

It was an immense boon to be able to step into an established agency with a multitude of proven processes and experienced staff in place. At the same time, it was clear to me that many of the processes they’d been relying on – like extensive and bulky paper files, for example – would need to be modernized to really make the agency more efficient going forward.

It was tricky, especially at first, to convince everyone of the need to make changes, and then to make sure the modernizations we tried were truly more efficient. Sometimes we made changes that had to be reassessed later on, and I made sure to acknowledge when something didn’t work and be open to suggestions for better options. It wasn’t a perfectly straight and easy path from where we started to where we are today, but through perseverance and dedication to open-mindedness, we have been able to grow the agency into a modern, efficient business

What’s something people should know about your generation in the workplace?

Millennials tend to be most efficient and driven when engaged in projects they’re passionate about. They like to be part of something bigger than themselves and feel like they’re making a positive impact in the world. Give them that, and they will take on the world to achieve their dreams.

How has this industry impacted your life?

Growing my knowledge of insurance has allowed me to become a nerd about a topic I didn’t know I loved, and it’s so rewarding to get to share the nuances of that knowledge with my clients. Also, insurance is a very customer-focused field, and it’s been a treat to come back to my hometown and connect with the community I was raised in. Working in insurance has allowed me to build relationships with customers, businesses, and farmers throughout the area, and I feel like everywhere I go, I see someone I’ve worked with – just ask my kids, who are constantly asking, “Dad, do you know them? I bet you write their insurance, don’t you?” That feeling of community and connectedness can’t be quantified. It’s priceless.
